Infinity: Chapter 8

Title: Infinity
Author:  [livejournal.com profile] sunshine_173
Rating: PG I guess for extremely minor language. If it's even that. Idk I"m too tired
Pairing: BellDom
Summary: Matt is a piano protégé. Dom is a painter who excels passed many his age. They meet at a young age and strike up an instant friendship. From friends to lovers, this is their story, spanning over a course of over two decades.
Feedback: I'm a comment whore. Every time I read one, miniature fairies take handfuls of love from my heart and dispense them into yours.
Disclaimer: I think if I owned Muse, you would know about it. They're a bit famous so I doubt it'd be something easily hidden.
Warning: I feel so redundant with this. NOTHING HAPPENING. If there was, it would be considered child pornography, and that shit ain't kosher.
Note: Coffee and pure determination is the only reason this was finished tonight/this morning. Apologies for any mistakes, this is unbeta'd.

23 October, 1995

The air was sharp and brisk against Dominic’s cheeks as he stepped outside on another Monday afternoon, the breeze not as chilly as he was initially preparing for. The sun peeked out from behind a grey cloud, its light trying vainly to reach every corner of the sidewalk Dominic stood on. He’d just finished school for that day and was beginning to walk home, loosening the scarf around his neck, a patient smile on his face as he watched an orange leaf fall from its tree. He  hadn’t made it three steps before he heard the familiar voice of Chris shouting out his name, his smile growing wider as he continued his slow walk.

“Dom! Oi, Dom! I know you can hear me, ya wanker, so just turn around and walk your arse back here.”
Dominic giggled quietly, shoving his hands in his coat pockets and only slighty slowing down. He snorted to himself when he heard Morgan and Tom join in, their voices near.

“Nah, mate, ya gotta woo him, y’know? He’s the sensitive type, all artsy and feminine. In order to capture his attention – he’s a rare breed, right – to capture his attention ya gotta show him the love.” Tom said, loud enough for Dominic to hear. The blonde bit his tongue to withhold the laughter that wanted to come out. He could practically see the smirk he knew Tom was wearing.

“Tom, shut up.” Dominic felt Chris’ eye roll. “Dom, if you don’t turn around by the time I finish this sentence, I will hunt you down.”

“And what, roleplay?” Morgan quipped.

Gasp, who told you about his dark side, Mo Mo.”

“This is an example of how great my resistance is, Dom! See what you’ve left me with? Arseholes. Complete arseholes. And I’ll only be able to resist not knocking their heads in if you turn around and stop ignoring your mates.” A short yelp sounded out as Chris finished, Dominic finally stopping by the time he reached the corner of the sidewalk. He sighed to himself, the smile on his face having only grown tenfold, and turned around, putting his hands up in the air and shrugging.

“What can I say guys, I can’t hear idiocy. I swear, it’s been diagnosed.” Dominic grinned at his friends a short distance away, Chris flipping him the bird and Tom massaging his upper arm.

“Shut up, Dommie.” Chris taunted as his best friend drew closer, a teasing glint in his eye. “I have had the worst day today and I’m ready to bury by troubles in a greasy burger or three.”

“Please, Chrissie, you’re in Year 13. Last one. No more. Nada. You aren’t allowed to whine to us when we still have a couple years.” Dominic raised an eyebrow at the older boy, walking through the trio of his friends and making a B line to the opposite side of the street. Chris, Tom, and Morgan followed, the latter two agreeing in unison with Dominic’s statement.

“Seriously, mate, it’s not even fair.” Tom frowned at Chris, a smile still in his eyes. “Why do
you even hang out with us? I wouldn’t hang out with us.”

“That just shows how low your moral standards are, Tom.” Morgan threw him a Cheshire grin.

Tom glared. “You’re just full of wit today, Mo Mo.”

“Oi, quit with that nickname, you know how much I hate it.” Morgan whipped his head to the right, his dark blue eyes flicking between Chris and Dominic. “Same with you two, you’re like a couple.”

“Yeah guys, get a room. I can hear you drooling for each other.”

“Tom, it’s hard not to-”

“Love me? I just know you’re gonna say ‘love me’. Am I right or am I right?” He grinned, ducking to dodge a slap from Chris.

“No, moron. It’s hard not to hate you.” Chris looked down at Tom, his height prevalent despite
only being a couple years older.

“Tsk, tsk. That’s harsh stuff, mate. You might wanna watch where you sleep tonight or Tom’s gonna show you what tough love really is.” Dominic smirked and exchanged a fist bump with Morgan.

“You are such a fairy.”

“Dom, you’re s’posed to be on my side, arsehole.” Pouting, Chris stuck his bottom lip out comically far and looked up at the grey sky with puppy dog eyes. “Nobody ever sides with me.”

“That pole’s abou- Ohh I know that hurt.” Tom and Morgan laughed together, Dominic doubled over clenching his stomach as Chris rubbed his chin with a grimace, eyeing the streetlight he just ran into.

“I hate all of you.”

“I honestly don’t think I have ever eaten that many burgers at one time.”

“Hate to break it to ya, Chris, but you were adopted. By a family of bears. But you ate so much they dropped you off in somebody’s house and never contacted you again.”

“That doesn’t even make sense, Tom. Just stop trying.”

“Your mortal brains can’t keep up with the wizardry that is my mind.”

“You play too many video games, mate. Everyone knows it.” Morgan smiled angelically, batting his eyelashes.

“Yeah?! Only cos you told ‘em!”

“Pshh, did not. You wear it like a flashing sign on your forehead with all that nerd talk.”

Morgan winked and laughed. “But Tom, oh my god, do you have the new Super Mario World? It came out like two weeks ago.”

Tom stared exasperatedly at his friend. “You are such an arse! You’re just as nerdy as me.” He shook his head; the final part of what Morgan said just registering in his head. “Oh, wow, I forgot about it.”

Dominic and Chris shared a glance and both started laughing, Chris putting the spare change from their meal on the table for their waitress’s tip. “C’mon, you three. Dom, didn’t your mum want you at your house after school today?”

Dominic’s face blanched. “Oh, god, I hope I’m not in deep.”

Chris shrugged, steering both Morgan and Tom out the door, both deeply engaged in their need-to-know  nowledge of everything that is Yoshi’s Island. “You should be okay. Your mum is cool about that stuff. Unless she’s in a bad mood. Mate, your mum can get scary.”

“Tell me about it, I live with her.”

“I basically do during the summer, so…”

Dominic snickered, he and Chris sharing a knowing glance as they sped their walk down the block leading to Dominic’s house.

“Hey, Dom, whose car is that in your driveway?” Chris asked, glancing at the grey sedan parked outside of Dominic’s house.

“No idea, prolly some friend of my mum’s.” Dominic shrugged, unzipping his coat and fully unknotting his scarf, the sun completely free of any cloud coverage. “Hey Morgan, Tom, break out of your love talk.”

The two simultaneously looked up and glared at the blonde, Chris snorting. “The effort you put into keeping our friendship is astounding.” Morgan nodded in agreement but couldn’t keep as good a poker face as Tom.

“Someone’s gotta try.” Dominic gave a cheery grin. “If my mum doesn’t make me stick around, ya wanna go piss about somewhere?” Dominic glanced at Chris as he spoke, the brunette bobbing his head.

“Yeah, sure. I’ve got time.”

Tom nodded, “Yeah, same with me.”

“Awesome. I’ll be right back, see what she wanted.” Dominic said over his shoulder, slowly jogging up his lawn to his front door.

The blonde reached for the door handle, pulling it open and automatically welcoming warmth, the smell of his mother’s candles reaching his nose. He glanced at his three friends standing next to his mailbox outside and smiled to himself when Tom tried to tackle Chris.

“Hey, mum!” Dominic shouted, walking through the foyer and throwing his scarf onto the coat rack. “Sorry I’m home late; I completely forgot you wanted me right after school.” He continued, peeking into the kitchen to see if she was there.

He could hear faint voices, the plural throwing him off until he remembered the grey car, in the living room. “Mum? Did you hea-” Dominic turned the corner at almost the same time his eyes went wide and jaw dropped.

Matthew sat at the end of the rocking chair, both of his hands clutching the edge of the seat and a nervous smile on his face, his blue eyes wide. The moment Dominic turned the corner and saw him, the younger boy’s smile widened, excitement and nervousness warring to be the dominant emotion flashing across his face.

Dominic stood, a smile beginning to stretch across his face as his eyes flickered between Matthew, Mrs. Bellamy, and his mum. “Well, this is a surprise.” Dominic glanced back at Matthew, both grinning the moment their eyes met again.

Matthew hopped up out of the chair, taking a few small steps towards his friend. Dominic took the time to look at Matthew, noting how he’d gained some weight since he last saw him over a year ago. Still slender, but not a wraith. His eyes were sharper than ever, their blue still nothing he’d seen before. Inquisitive and distant, more so than they’d ever been, they too briefly glanced over Dominic before meeting his grey ones once again.

“It’s been awhile.” Matthew said, quirking his head with a strange little smile on his face. The smaller boy reached out, giving Dominic an awkward sideways hug, the blonde returning it with a smile on his face despite becoming suddenly consciously aware that his mum and Matthew’s grandmother were waiting for them to do something.

His mother was the first to break the silence, an amused look on her face as the boys continued to
watch each other. “Well, I’m sure you two have tons to catch up on.”

Dominic jumped a little, whipping his head towards his mum. “Yeah. Right. Can Matt hang out with Chris and me? If that’s okay with you, Mrs. Bellamy.” Dominic paused, nervously glancing at Matthew. “If that’s cool with you?” Matthew giggled, nodding his head.

The two women exchanged a look, both smiling. “By Chris, you mean Chris, Tom, and Morgan?”

Dominic swallowed. “Yes.”

Mrs. Howard laughed silently to herself, her shoulders shaking as she turned to Matthew’s gran. “They’re good boys, Marilyn. If you just want to go home, I know it’s been a long trip, then they-”

Matthew’s gran cut her off with a laugh. “Oh, it’s fine, dear.” She turned to look at Matthew. “You go have fun; I know it’s been awhile since you two have last seen each other. Be home within the hour, though, we still need to unpack. Do you remember the house number?” She glanced at Mrs. Howard, Dominic’s mother opening her mouth before Dominic cut in.

“I wouldn’t mind walking him home; it’s no problem with me. I know this neighborhood like the back of my hand. Do you live in this neighborhood?” He scrunched his eyebrows up and glanced sideways at Matthew, who gave a shrug in return.

Matthew’s gran gave Dominic the address, the blonde committing it to memory and promising to have him home before dinner and to be safe. The two boys said goodbye to the two women and turned, excitedly glancing at each other and grabbing their respective coats and scarves before heading out the front door.

Dominic shut the door behind him, Matthew bouncing on his heels and watching Tom, Morgan, and Chris in Dominic’s lawn. The blonde turned to call out them but paused, glancing at Matthew. “This might be our only chance to actually talk before they realize you’re here.”

Matthew arched an eyebrow. “Oh?”

“Yeah, they’ll probably be peppering you with questions till they go home. So uh…how’ve you been?” Dominic motioned to the front porch step and sat down, Matthew doing the same, two large rose bushes blocking them from the other boy’s view. Dominic wrapped his arms around his bent legs and rested his head against his knees, staring at Matthew as he waited for an answer.

“I’ve uh, I’ve been good. Better, actually. The switch to my gran’s house wasn’t much of a change, and I haven’t been in school for a week so I’m good. I’m happy. Bit nervous about next Monday, though.”

“You start class then?”

Matthew nodded. “Not too thrilled for that. My gran is trying to get me to take this test that will
judge my intelligence or something. Dunno what for, honestly. What about you? How’s the life of Dominic Howard?” The younger boy mirrored the other’s position, both watching each other. Dominic felt almost uncomfortable from Matthew’s stare, his eyes seeming so much older than they ever had been. Like they were learning him over again.

It wasn’t that their interaction was awkward. It was anything but that. They never spoke because it wasn’t how they were used to communicating. Dominic realized in the small time it’d been since he found out Matthew had finally come to London that despite having not seen him since July of the previous year, he still picked up on tiny changes in Matthew’s expression.

“Absolutely nothing of importance. Other than hanging out with those idiots, I don’t really do much other than paint and school and homework.”

Matthew snorted, breaking eye contact and looking through the bush in front of him to continue watching as Chris utterly dominated Morgan when he too tried to tackle him. “Quite the life, Dom.”

Tom took that moment to shout without restraint Dominic’s nickname. “Where are you, oh Dommie?! We miss you so!” Dominic shook his head as Matthew laughed.

“I thought your mum just called you that.”

“She did, until they heard it. Tom’s a wanker though, so he’ll find any nickname to call you. Morgan’s is Mo Mo and he bloody hates it.”

“Do-oo-oom, we have to go soon!” Morgan joined in the wailing, Chris’ laughter coming in last.

“Okay, okay, we’re right here.” Dominic said, standing up and rolling his eyes with a smile at Matthew.

“Wait, did he just say we?” Tom asked Morgan and Chris, and the three all looked at Dominic as his head  peeked up over the bushes. “Whoa, dude do you have a girl with you? How did this happen, you were gone like, ten minutes.”

“No, Captain, I have a friend of mine I’d like to introduce to you all.” Dominic looked down at Matthew, still sitting with his legs bent and snickering to himself. Dominic kicked Matthew in the foot, the black-haired boy jumping with a smile before he stood and nervously looked up at the three boys in front of him.

“Holy smokes, batman, is that this Matthew I keep hearing about?” Chris exclaimed, his face resembling Morgan’s shocked expression. Tom just grinned and mouthed to Dominic that he was a fairy.

“Yeah, I am that Matthew. You can call me Matt though, if you’d like.” The Matthew in question reached his hand back to scratch behind his ear, Dominic noticing it as one of his nervous twitches.

“…What’s your last name, Matt?” Tom asked, a sly smile spreading across his face.

Matthew eyed him. “It’s um, Bellamy.”

Tom’s smile turned into a full fledged grin, “Awesome. Well you already know me-”

“Whoa, how do you already know Matt? This kid is Dom’s number one obsession and you know about him before I do? What the hell, Dom?” Chris stared at him in amazement.

“Seriously, mate, low blow. Low blow. You should’ve at least chosen me over Tom, to keep some of your dignity.” Morgan shook his head in faux-disappoint and winked at Matthew.

“Jesus, will you three just shush. Especially you, Tom. It’s now been established this is Matt-”

“Bells.”

“-And he just moved here today.” Dominic finished, casting a glare towards Tom. “I think we should go ahead and start walking towards your place, Morgan, it’s nearing dinner.”

Morgan frowned a little. “Yeah, I guess you’re right.”

“Does that mean we get to interrogate you?” Chris asked, staring directly at Matthew.

“Er, sure. I’m not that interesting, though.”

“That’s not what I’ve heard.” Tom said, waggling his eyebrows as he threw his arm around Matthew’s narrow shoulders, Dominic dragging a hand down his face.

“It really is great to see you, Matt. It’s a bit of a relief that we can hang out regularly instead of just writing every few days or weeks.” Dominic said, watching the sidewalk pass under him as he walked Matthew down the block to his house.

The younger boy smiled softly. “It’s nice to have friends. More than one, y’know?” Matthew looked away from Dominic’s down-turned face and glanced at the sunset. “This is the most fun I’ve had in less than an hour that I’ve had the last four years. If that.”

Dominic frowned at the ground. “I’m sorry, mate. I’m sorry all that happened.”

“It’s nothing, Dom, reall-”

“No, Matt, it is.” Dominic stopped, grabbing Matthew by the arm and bringing him to face him. “You should never have had to go through that and I hate that I couldn’t have been there to keep you away from it all. Even if I had to kidnap you, I would’ve. It’s just a bit shit when you can’t drive. Or really get out of your house without permission. I just, I want you to know that I’ve got your back – we all do, Tom, Morgan, and Chris. They might be ridiculous sometimes but once you’re in, you’re in. And Matt, you’re in. If anyone ever messes with you, I’ll beat the shit out of them. And if I don’t, Chris will. You don’t need to be afraid again, okay?”

Matthew stood, frozen and silent, staring up at Dominic.

“Okay?”

“Ye-yeah. Yeah, okay. Okay.” Matthew looked flustered for a moment but hid it, glancing away from Dominic and at the houses next to them. “You picked a good spot to stop, cos that’s my house right there.”

Dominic looked over his shoulder, smiling. “I’m the cleverest of them all.” He said with a wink. “I’ll see you later, yeah? I’ve gotta get home too. Just give me a call, same number.”

Matthew smiled. “Yeah, see you.”
